Fly Fishing

Dullstroom is affectionately known as the country’s trout mecca by avid fly-fishers and the dams at Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate are no exception. Boasting 23 meticulously cared for fly-fishing dams nestled against the Steenkampsberg mountains, each stocked year-round with rainbow trout.

Whether you’re a beginner learning how to tie a Royal Coachman or a long-time fisherman perfecting your dry fly-fishing technique, you’ll enjoy Dunkeld Country & Equestrian’s high-quality fly-fishing environment. Our dams are conveniently located within walking distance from our accommodation and stocked from our very own world renowned Dunkeld Trout Hatcheries.

Horse Riding

While in Dullstroom you have the chance to lose touch with the chaos of city life and replace it with a connection to the natural world, and there is no better way to do it than on horseback. When you go horseback riding with us you experience the rolling hills, trout-filled dams and meandering streams, all while feeling the wind in your hair and the sound of hoofbeats on the route.

Our horses are well trained and trustworthy, giving even the most novice rider the confidence to enjoy a ride in the Dullstroom countryside. Our Equestrian Centre is a popular destination for short weekend riding workshops for the more experienced rider.

Mountain Biking

In and around Dullstroom

With its rolling hills and beautiful landscape Dullstroom is truly a cyclists paradise. You will be able to lose yourself in the sport with a choice of mountain biking trails to choose from. At over 2000 meters above sea level, the air is thin and crisp and will offer a challenging opportunity to improve their abilities, not to mention how fresh the clean air will feel in your lungs.

Dunkeld offers a choice of three mountain biking trails that you can easily access from your accommodation. Stretching a total distance of 36km, the single-track pathways have multiple streams and bridges that wind their way through the most beautiful parts of the country, offering an entertaining off-road experience.

For those visitors who are not as committed to the mountain biking lifestyle but still want to enjoy the activity and this exciting way to view the area, Dunkeld also rents out mountain bikes.

Quad Biking

If you’re looking for a fun experience in the great outdoors, Quad Biking is the activity for you! Jump on the back of one of our four wheelers and set out on a thrilling quad trail through the Dullstroom countryside for an adrenaline filled day.

Hiking & Running

Be sure to pack your hiking boots for your next trip to Dullstroom. Nestled against the Steenkampsberg mountain range, Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate offers some of the most spectacular scenery where you can choose your own route, winding past dams, roaming wildlife and the exquisitely quiet, misty mountains. The use of the hiking trails is free for all guests.

Altitude Training

Dullstroom offers high performance athletes a unique training opportunity due to its altitude of around 2,150m metres above sea level at Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate. Whether you’re training for your next marathon or mountain-bike race there is no better place to stay and train and it’s not unusual to bump into Comrades winners as they train for their next marathon.

With the second highest peak in South Africa, being only 2,5 hours outside of Johannesburg or Pretoria Dullstroom is convenient location for a dedicated session of high-altitude training.

Bird Watching

Due to its altitude of around 2,000 metres, Dullstroom provides an opportunity to record, amidst beautiful hill and marshy valleys, some of the more difficult and elusive highveld species, such as Wattled Crane, Yellowbreasted Pipit and Gurney’s Sugarbird.

For the best results we recommend a weekend visit, giving you more time to appreciate the birds at Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate or some of the various circular drives located throughout and close to Dullstroom.

Best Season: September to January.

Swimming Pools &
Putt-Putt

Let the kids make a splash on a hot summers day as you unwind in one of our luxurious swimming pools. Or set out with the family for an afternoon round of putt-putt (mini-golf) on our 9-hole course.
